Judging will be May 8^th – reception will be at 6pm

CREDO

To foster home wine and beer making and to learn to

appreciate the finer points of beer and wine making.

Wines & Steins was started in the late spring of 1979 by a group of home winemakers in the Willow Creek area of rural Paso Robles. They felt that it would be rewarding to get together to share their knowledge of wine and beer making.

It didn’t take long for the membership to expand in the North County with a sprinkling of members from Central and South County cities.

On the first Friday of each month we have a Steering Meeting to plan future events. After a short business meeting, we share food and wine and get to know each other. All members and guests are welcome.

· I’ve noticed that many people have forgotten some of the rules:

A member is to bring a bottle of wine per person or a six-pack of beer to the monthly steering meetings. This bottle of wine is a wine that you have either enjoyed making, purchasing and sharing with others. The value of a good tasting wine is something that a person should strive to achieve over time in the learning and appreciation of different wines. The wines that are placed on the community Wine Table IS TO REMAIN on the wine table.

The remaining wine at the community wine table is given and divided up with the Host and Co-Host, this is their treat for volunteering in that position monthly. All members should strive to be a Host or Co-Host, this is a members way of giving back to the club.

A member is to bring a side dish, salad, appetizer, or dessert

to each meeting BESIDES the main entree have choose to bring for themselves.

The side dishes, salads, appetizer or desserts that other people bring IS NOT to be considered a main entree for any member or person attending Wines & Steins.

All members whom invite a guest to attend a monthly Wines & Steins steering meeting should notify Guest of the these housekeeping rules or the member that brings a guest should bring the appropriate food and wine for his/her guest to the meeting.

All new members/guest will receive a ribbon from membership so

that these new faces invite conversation and be introduced to the rest of the club members. All Ribbons are to be turned in at the end of the meeting.

The Host and Co-Hosts are volunteers. They commit themselves

to the setting up to tables, chairs, turning on oven, the cleaning up of the hall and coordinating the potluck portion for the monthly steering meeting.

The potluck portion of the club has always been a way for members to share food after the general steering meeting has been completed.

Everyone is responsible for their own dish brought to be placed on the potluck table and removed during clean up.

There is a Lost & Found that the Host and Co-Hosts bring to each and every meeting so that forgotten items can be retrieved.

3. Treasurer’s Report – Rhonda:

· we have $2,661.11 in our account

· we received notice that our current insurance carrier is not going to renew our policy – based on this we selected Ted Hamm insurance to get a policy – it will cost us more for about half the coverage – they will need a complete list of our equipment plus where its stored – Tom Johnson will provide this to Rhonda

· April Beer training and making session will be held at Barry Ross’ home – due to size constraints, there is a 30 person limit for this event – Steve will be at the April meeting talking about it in depth with full specifics – this is a fun event and we hope to have more like this throughout the year

Tom: Guest Speaker: Lola and Steve Glossner from PasoPort – Steve took us through the story of port, how its made and the new rulings on calling this style of wine “port” [some older wineries who carried port before the new rulings can still use this term, but as soon as they renew their names they have to drop ‘port’ from the label] wineries can refer to Portugese-stye wine but not port-style wine. Steve introduced us to his ‘girls’: Ruby, Violeta, Tawney and Angelica who are Vargas style models gracing each of the bottles. We had a good question and answer session throughout the discussion and after
Phyllis Gonzales has a friend who needs help planting 50 vines – call her if you’re interested

· Firestone Walker Beer Fest “sale” tickets are sold out – the rest of the tickets go on sale 2/10

· Look for information on a beer making event to be held in April at Barry Ross’s home – this is a limited attendance event [30 people total]

Marty: Guest Speaker: Zina Miakinkov & Jac Jacobs – LeVigne Vineyards & Winery presented us with cheeses paired to LeVigne’s Chardonnay, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Merlot

· Zina’s highly regard in the area as an authority on cheese and has worked with many local wineriesto develop their own wine and cheese pairings. She is a Level 1 Sommelier and a Certified Specialist of Wine and is working on becoming one of the first Certified Fromagers in the area – she’s also the Central Coast Cheese lady on radio KRUSH 92.5

· Jac’s the winemaker for LeVigne – after years working at a variety of vineyards and wineries, helping to start Gloria Ferrer Champagne Cellars and moving on to several Lake County and Sonoma wineries where he started developing hi own wine making style. In 2003 Jac moved to the Paso area and started working for the Filippini family at LeVigne [formerly Sylvesters]. Since then he had been learning the different nuances of the appellation and making high quality wines.

3. Beer Report –

· Our Bewmaster, Greg Pennelli didn’t re-up as a member so we’re without one for now – anyone like to step up?

· Holly Todd: she's the event coordinator for hospice and they're doing a few different things next year for the "festival of beers" or beerapalooza, including having a home beer competition, with the blessings of the national beer association, winners going onto national comps....!!!!!

The CaliforniaFestival of Beers is an annual beer festival and one of America's largest and oldest regional beer tastings held at the new Madonna Polo Fields.

The California Festival of Beers is traditionally held on Memorial Day weekend and features over 50 brewers who feature their micro brewed creations.

This year the festival would like support from Wines & Steins as well as entries from our home brew masters

Mission San Antonio’s annual Spaghetti Dinner (Sunday January 29, 2012), serves from 11am to 3pm. Meal tickets are $10/plate. You’ll find Italian ambiance takes over our Refectory as our volunteers cook up tempting pasta dinners with all the trimmings, including salad and garlic bread.

5. UCCE will be holding a Vineyard Frost Protection Seminar on the morning of Feb. 2, 2012 at the J. Lohr Wine Center east of Paso Robles. For more information and to register, please see the following website:

6. Don't miss IGGPRA's seminar on Trellis™ herbicide and Pruning! This is a great opportunity to learn about important vineyard practices from Dow AgroSciences, Precision Ag Consulting and IGGPRA President, Richard Sauret.

Presidents Report- Sharen Bloechel

Sharen announced the our bank balance is 1392.00 and we have $1370.00 in the equipment fund. Mike Taylor was our host and David Gerber was our cohost. Next meeting our Host will be David Gerber and Co host Phyllis Gonzalez. We discussed sponsoring Cal Poly Students enrolled in the Cal Poly enology program and voted to create a student category in Wines and Steins with a minimum age of 21 years. We had a speaker Dr. Michael Yoshimura from Cal Poly that spoke to us on the subject of Plant Pathology. We learned about common diseases and causes in wine grapes.

And as usual there was a 50/50 raffle.

Nominating Committee: Comprised of Charlie Rahilly, Carol Kempthorne, Karen Davis and Dick Blake they’re accepting names from people who are interested in any of the board positions. They will also be approaching people to “feel” them out to see if they might like to get INVOLVED. They will announce the results in June.

May Blind Tasting:

Bill & Marilyn Sisler and Mike & Johna DeBellis plus helpers staged our Blind Tasting. Using the guidelines from the Blind Tasting game his son sold. Every one involved in the tasting brought a bottle of wine – Central Cost Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Zinfandel or Petit Syrah.When the tasting was done, we had a scrumptious potluck dinner.

Home wine contest entries due April 15

The California Mid-State Fair is now accepting entries for the annual home wine competition.

The deadline for entries is April 15, and entry guidelines are available at www.midstatefair.com. Details are also available at 239-0655.

The 2011 California Mid-State Fair runs July 20 through July 31. This year’s theme is Mountains of Fun.

President Guy Callari opened this month’s meeting.
A reminder was made to please drink and drive responsibly. We have a 2 million dollar insurance policy which costs $560.
Our meeting hosts were Nancy and Steve Mello. Co hosts were Greg & Jean Wilt. Members are sincerely encouraged to sign up and be a host.

Our Guest Speaker was Dr. Keith Patterson. He presented a brief history on the evolution of vineyard management. He surprised some of us with new knowledge that could contradict some preconceived notions about quantity and quality of the resulting product of our vineyards. Keith gave us some background on his experience. He explained how you can more acurately estimate the quality and productivity of your vineyard. Not simply tons per acre. The most scientific measure of doing this is measuring productivity by linear foot. You cant take a gross measure.

Presidents Report:
We had a great turnout at Vic & June Butera's vineyard in San Miguel on Saturday Jan. 15. Some W&S people went there to help prune during the week, most of them (18 people) went as a group on Saturday. The beautiful weather, the camaraderie, and a great lunch were part of a wonderful day in the vineyard.

In order for you to be in compliance, the Regional Water Quality Control Board is requiring a "Notice of Intent" Irrigated Ag Discharge Waiver form to be submitted by January 31, 2011.

If you have questions, are having trouble filling out the online form, or if you do not have access to the internet, come to one of these workshops.

The workshop will go over the requirements and help you get your form filled out in preparation for filing deadline.

Presidents Report:
A winemaking club in Idaho contacted our club looking to purchase grapes. A letter was sent out to inactive members letting them know they wont be receiving a newsletter and that the dues to rejoin will be higher since they allowed their membership to lapse. Guy asked if anyone knows where we might be able to get some free tickets to the Wine Symposium in Sacramento. We have 60 paid reservations for the Christmas party to date. Dont forget to RSVP soon as the price will increase from $65 to $70 soon. The Christmas party is open to non members. The menu is going to be really nice; it will include olive tapenade , salmon, roast beef with portobello mushroom and more. You can reserve a table and seating in advance. Dont forget its Sunday Dec. 12th from 6-11pm. This Thanksgiving at centennial park volunteers will be providing a wonderful dinner for those less fortunate. Last year 700 people were served. If you would like to lend a hand volunteers are needed on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Tom Johnson gave us an update on the proper method for checking out the wine making equipment. Everyone must follow the required procedure - no impromptu borrowing.

Rhonda Evans gave us a Treasurers report that stated we are in the black.

Mark Battany was our speaker for the evening and presented us with an interesting informative talk on viticulture and soils. He covered best pruning techniques, virus infections, poor root stock and the benefits of cover crops. The perils of over fertilization and its problems. Included in his tips were dont water excessively after harvest Delay pruning as late as possible, don't prune before rain storms. If you need any assistance with your vineyard contact Mark.

Sad News from John Himes

Hello Dear Family and Friends,

Some of you may already have heard of Mira’s passing from other sources but I wanted to tell each of you personally and thank you for being her friend. Mira was a kind and gentle soul who was loved by many.

On 11/11/10 Mira left us all for the higher realms of the Universe. Mira went to her home in Riga Latvia to visit her mother and family. While there she was getting routine medical work done, which was not affordable in this country, when she was diagnosed with rectal cancer. A successful operation was performed immediately and she was recovering well when she was struck with a pulmonary embolism (blood clot) to the heart and lungs. She lay in a coma for 3 days before leaving for her next assignment.

Mira was my earth angel whom I shall love always. She is with us all now as a real angel and continues to spread her love to all.

I am working to stay in balance and I understand that “ everything is as it should be, everything is perfect”. I now share my Mira with all of you. Please hug someone that you love today.

Presidents Report:
The Lobster Fest was a great success, thanks to all who participated. Johna gave us an interesting history of Octoberfest. This event has been going on for 200 years. Octoberfest began in Munich Germany in 1810 as a celebration of King Ludwig the first. The delicious brats for our event were provided by Scolari’s. We had a grand time, the evening’s highlight was the Oom pah pah music and the members joyfully demonstrated the Chicken Dance, led by Johna, Prost! Wow what a fun group. Notices: Will whoever took a blue and white cooler with the name Byron & Louise LeBlanc written on it; please make sure to return it to them right away. Mark Battany will do a short talk about 20 mins long on "vineyard renovation", which is a procedure to return an aging vineyard to full production. This will be very appropriate given the age distribution of area vineyards, and the current market conditions. He will also answer a few questions from new vineyard owners on what to do to soil and vines after harvest. Owners have been so busy weeding, spraying, netting, etc. during Spring and Summer ......Mark will cover what we need to do in the vineyard in the Fall.
